Instructions - Wall Preparation
Below are the recommended steps to take before wallpapering with wallpapers from our collection.
For non-woven wallpapers from the Milassa and Loymina collections, there are additional instructions!
It's crucial that the wall to be wallpapered is smooth, clean, strong, and dry. Only then will the wallpaper adhere well and look its best—no blisters, peeling, or unsightly imperfections. Here's a list of criteria to consider when determining the condition of your wall.
-
Stability – the surface on which we want to apply the wallpaper must not crumble under pressure. Therefore, old paint must not chip.
-
Smoothness – any unevenness will be visible. If the surface is covered in holes or plaster is peeling, these imperfections must be removed. Any nail holes, hanger holes, or other irregularities should be filled with filler and, once dry, smoothed with fine-grain sandpaper.
-
Light color and cleanliness – with light wallpaper , dark paint colors on the wall can show through, so they should be removed. The same applies to streaks or rust marks. Before applying light wallpaper, simply paint the wall with white emulsion paint.
-
Absorbency – Perfect wallpaper adhesion depends primarily on good adhesive and an absorbent wall. Absorbency can be tested with water. If you apply the wallpaper to the wall with a brush and it doesn't soak in, leaving a wet spot or causing droplets to appear, it's a sign that the surface isn't absorbent enough.
-
If you're applying wallpaper to a wall previously painted with oil paint, you should sand it down with sandpaper. This will improve the wallpaper's adhesion, as oil paint creates a rather slippery coating that must then be removed.
- Moisture – wallpaper won't adhere to a wall that's damp or moldy. Furthermore, there's a risk of moisture transferring to the wallpaper surface. Therefore, dry the walls before wallpapering.
After all the tests/activities performed above, the wall should be primed - we always recommend Ceresit 17 for this (it is not worth using cheaper/worse products, do not dilute the primer, everything according to the proportions on the packaging).
After priming, leave the wall to dry for at least 24 hours, we recommend 48 hours depending on the ventilation in the room.
Finally, before wallpapering, we recommend removing the sockets, wall lamps, light points and other elements that can be dismantled - this will allow you to achieve a perfect wallpaper finish after re-installing them.
